The Boy Who Invented Himself

I walked into my eight-year-old son Will's room tonight to tell him it was time to go trick-or-treating and I found him singing along while Robyn Hitchcock's "The Man Who Invented Himself" played on his stereo. I've never been the kind of parent to push my idea of "cool" music on my kids--whatever they want to listen to is fine by me. Still, I have to admit it's kind of nice to see Will take an interest in one of my favorite artists.

Now that's happiness. A couple of Hitchcock songs my kids have enjoyed: Balloon Man, The Man With the Lightbulb Head, and Adventure Rocketship.

I bet Will would like "Balloon Man" and "Man With The Lightbulb Head" too. Of course, he'll ask me what they're about, and I'll have to tell him something.

Good stuff. I'm happy to report that my guys love Redd Kross, but they have little to no appreciation for stuff that doesn't rawk. Robyn doesn't make the cut, sadly. Of course, these things can change over time.

Will has yet to show an interest in rocking out. I don't think that was really my thing at that age either. It wasn't probably until Junior High School when I discovered punk, that I started to appreciate rock. Before that I was very suspicious of classic rock and heavy metal. It wasn't until college that I learned to appreciate KISS, and even then at a certain ironic distance.

It was actually really funny, when I went into Will's room to tell him it was time to go he said, "I knew it would work. I knew if I put my favorite song on it would make the time pass faster."

It's nice to hear there's something to look forward to when it comes to parenthood.
